词汇 | pay |
词源 | pay [ME] The original meaning of pay was ‘to pacify’, and it goes back to Latin pax ‘peace’ (see peace). The notion of ‘payment’ arose from the sense of ‘pacifying’ a creditor. A cartoon caption from the magazine Punch in 1846 was the source of you pays your money and you takes your choice, used to convey that there is little to choose between one alternative and another. |
