solemnity n.c. 1300, solempnite, "religious rite; observance of ceremony, pomp, formality on important occasions," from Old French solemnite, solempnete "celebration, high festival, church ceremony" and directly from Latin solemnitatem (nominative solemnitas) "a solemnity," in Medieval Latin also sollempnitas, solennitas, from Latin sollemnis, sollempnis "established, religiously fixed; formal, ceremonial" (see solemn).
