Silurian adj.1708, "pertaining to the Silures," the ancient British tribe inhabiting what now is southeast Wales, from Latin Silures. The geological use is from 1835, taken by Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871), who worked out the sequence studying rock of this period prevalent in south Wales.
