c. 1600, "a taking of sides in a conflict or debate, the attaching of oneself to a party," verbal noun from side (v.). It is attested by 1825 in the railroad sense of "short additional track beside a main line for shunting and passing;" by 1829 in American English in the architectural sense of "weather-boarding, boarding on the sides of a building."
