joust (v.)

约于1300年，“与另一位骑士骑马用矛或长矛进行单挑； 在锦标赛中进行比武”，源自古法语 joster “进行骑士比武，进行单挑”，源自通俗拉丁语 *iuxtare “接近，相遇”，最初的意思是“靠近”，源自拉丁语 iuxta “在旁边，靠近，非常接近”，源自 PIE 词根 *yeug- “连接”的后缀（最高级）形式。以前的拼写方式，根据 OED 的说法，一直到现代都是“just”。相关词汇： Jousted； jouster； jousting。
