Tannhauser. Though his poetry was indifferent, this 13th- century German meistersinger attracted many legends around his name. One claimed that his staff budded in his hands, while another said that he escaped from Venusberg, “the place of fleshly temptation,” with the help of Our Lady. These legends appealed to many writers and became the basis for several works, including Wagner’s celebrated three-act opera Tannhauser, which was named after him. |
