style is the man. The great French naturalist author Comte de Buffon (1707–88) did not say this upon his 1753 induction into the Académie Française. What he said in his Discourse sur le style address was “Le style, c’este l’homme meme”: Style is the man himself. Yet “style is the man” is the way his observation is usually heard in English today. |
