steatopygous. “With many Hottentot women,” Darwin wrote, “the posterior part of the body projects in a wonderful manner; they are steatopygous.” Darwin clearly appreciated this way that some women extend in his Descent of Man, but the word steatopygous, when applied to Hottentot Bushmen (especially the Bongos) or anyone else, clearly isn’t nearly as complimenta- ry as callipygian. Deriving from the Greek for “fat rumped,” its dictionary definition is “a protuberance of the buttocks, due to an abnormal accumulation of fat in and behind the hips and thighs.” |
