A game that can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, horseshoes is said to have originated with soldiers tak- ing old horseshoes they had removed from their horses and tossing them for distance. These contests evolved into the game of horseshoes played by throwing horseshoes as close as possi- ble to a stake driven into the ground 30 or 40 feet away. The name for the game, however, doesn’t seem to be recorded until the beginning of the 19th century. See lucky horseshoes.
