词汇 | mcnaughton rules |
词源 | McNaughton Rules. Assassin Daniel McNaughton shot and killed British prime minister Robert Peel’s private secretary, Edmund Drummond, in 1843, mistaking the Peel look-alike for Sir Robert. McNaughton, an illegitimate, illiterate Scots- man, was tried and acquitted by reason of insanity, the court ruling that a person who is unaware of doing wrong could be considered insane and not responsible for his actions. This Mc- Naughton ruling, though changed considerably over the years, is still used in a general sense today. |
