whore. Hore, the first English spelling of whore, was recorded at the beginning of the 12th century, deriving from Norse horr and Gothic hors, meaning “adulterer,” the word hore, strangely enough, related to Latin carus, “dear,” which gives us terms of endearment such as caress and cherish. Whore is still regarded as a terrible insult to a woman, more so even than prostitute, harlot, and tramp, not to mention many “softer” terms such as courtesan, hooker, hustler, call girl, sporting girl, painted woman, lady of the night, and streetwalker. Obsolete U.S. syn- onyms include soiled doves and calico queens. In extended use whore is applied to anyone who sells out his or her principles for personal gain. |
