pension [ME] In early use a pension was a payment, a tax, or a regular sum paid to keep someone’s loyalty. The word is derived from Latin pendere ‘to pay, weigh’, the source also of stipend [LME]. Use of the word to describe an annuity paid to a retired employee has developed since the early 16th century.
