irony [E16th] Irony comes, probably via medieval French yronie, from Latin ironia, ‘wit in which one says the opposite of what one means, pretended ignorance’, which in turn had been borrowed from Greek eironia ‘dissimulation’ formed from eiron ‘dissembler’. It thus has a rather gentler origin that the *sarcasm with which it is often confused.
