Neoplatonism n.also Neo-platonism, 1827 in reference to a philosophical and religious system mixing Platonic ideas and oriental mysticism, originating 3c. at Alexandria, especially in writings of Plotinus, Porphyry, and Proclus; see neo- "new" + Platonism.
