brontophobia n."fear of thunder and thunderstorms," 1905 (but it appears in Flügel's 1891 German-English dictionary, translated as Gewitterfurcht), with -phobia + Greek brontē "thunder," which is perhaps from PIE imitative root *bhrem- "to growl." Brontēs was the name of one of the Cyclopes in Greek mythology, and bronteion was the name of the ancient theatrical machine for producing a sound of thunder. updated on October 24, 2022 |
