bother v.1718, also bauther, bather, bodder, "to bewilder, confuse;" 1745 as "give trouble to;" first in Irish writers (Sheridan, Swift, Sterne), hence probably from Anglo-Irish pother, which is perhaps from Irish bodhairim "I deafen."
