In reference to a section of the U.S., from 1806, when it meant "of Mississippi and Alabama territories." Related: Southwesterner. As a noun, "direction or region between south and west," from early 12c. In U.S. use by 1835 (in reference to Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana). Related: Southwestward; southwesterly.
