southerly1550s (adj.), "from or in the south;" 1570s (adv.), "toward the south;" from south + -ly (1) and (2) on pattern of westerly. Related: Southerliness. Earlier adjective was southright "to or from the south" (Old English suþrihte), also southly (mid-15c.). Another old adjective was southen (with -en (2)), in reference to a wind, "from the south," from Old English suþan-wind. Southernly (adj.)
