somber adj.1760, of places or landscapes, "gloomy, shadowy" (earlier this was sombrous, 1701), from French sombre "dark, gloomy" (14c.), an adjective formed from Late Latin subumbrare "to shadow," from sub "under" (see sub-) + umbra "shade, shadow" (see umbrage).
