sniggler n.1840, one who fishes (especially for eels) by putting bait into their lurking places, agent noun from sniggle (v.), which is attested in a sense related to this from 1660s (implied in sniggling). It is the verbal suffix -le in some sense + snig "an eel" (late 15c.), a word of obscure origin but perhaps related to snake (n.) and sneak (v.). updated on February 05, 2023 |
