sleepless adj.early 15c., sleples, "deprived of sleep, being without sleep," from sleep (n.) + -less. Old English had slæpleas but the modern word seems to be a re-formation. Similar formation in German schlaflos, Dutch slapeloos. By 1792 as "continually active, unceasing;" by 1827 as "marked by absence or want of sleep." Related: Sleeplessly; sleeplessness.
