skidoo v.a vogue word of 1905, "to leave in a hurry," perhaps a variant of skedaddle (q.v.). The association with twenty-three is as old as the word, but the exact connection was obscure when it emerged and none of the guesses seem to hold much water. You only know that "twenty-three means to betake yourself." And it's hard to learn why "46" or "63" or "9" should not be the "duck number" instead of "23." These are explanations from the race course. [Kansas City Star May 6, 1905; skidoo is given earlier as one of the synonyms] Ski-doo as the proprietary name of a type of snowmobile, 1961, from ski. updated on December 03, 2022 |
