simoleon n.slang for "dollar," 1895, American English, of unknown origin. Related sambolio is attested from 1886; perhaps [OED] this was based on a deformation of Napoleon as the name of a late 19c. French gold coin. But also compare the Latin coin-names semodius "half a modius," simbella "coin worth half a libella," in which the first element is semi- (see semi-). updated on October 29, 2022 |
