Proterosaurus n.also Protorosaurus, extinct genus of lizard-like reptiles first found fossilized in rocks from the late Permian in Germany and Britain, 1872, from Latinized form of Greek proteros "former, earlier" (see protero-) + sauros "lizard" (see -saurus).
