gauge (v.)

“通过精确测量确定”，15世纪中叶，来自盎格鲁-法语 gauge（14世纪中叶），源自古北法语 gauger “标准化，校准，测量”（古法语 jaugier），来自 gauge “测量杆”，一个起源不明的词。也许来自法兰克 *galgo “测量用的杆，柱”或其他日耳曼语源（比较古诺尔斯语 gelgja “杆，栖木”，古高地德语 galgo； 参见 gallows）。相关词汇： Gauged； gauging。比喻用法始于1580年代。“拼写变体 gauge 和 gage 自中古英语以来就存在，尽管在美国英语中， gage 仅用于技术用途”[Barnhart]。
