deep six (n.)

"被丢弃的地方"，最早出现于1921年的词组 give (something) the deep six，最初是摩托艇行话，可能源自于早期黑社会名词意义上的“坟墓”（1929年），这可能是指通常的六英尺深度。但是这个短语（与 mark twain 一样）也出现在航海术语中，表示六个英寻的测量：
