Vice squad “打击卖淫、贩毒、赌博等的特殊警察部门”见于1905年的美式英语。Vice anglais “鞭打癖”（字面意思是“英国的恶习”）可追溯到1942年，源自法语。在古法语中，七宗罪被称为 les set vices。
