词汇 remember pearl harbor
词源
Remember Pearl Harbor! Sixteen ships were sunk, 2,400 American servicemen were killed, and virtually all American planes supporting the fleet were destroyed on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese launched a surprise attack from six aircraft carriers against Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. This action at Oahu led to the expression day of infamy and the battle cry Remember Pearl Harbor! that America carried into World War II. American intelligence evidently decoded a secret Japanese diplomatic note announcing the attack and sent a warning to Hawaii an hour and 25 minutes before the first enemy bombs hit. The special military communication lines to Hawaii were not working, and Washington intelligence sent the warning as a regular telegram via Western Union, which took 101⁄2 hours to reach Honolulu. Had the warning arrived in time, the Pacific fleet might have been saved and the war pro- voked by Japan’s attack concluded much sooner. See let’s roll.
