plenty [ME] ‘Fullness’ and ‘perfection’ were the early senses of plenty which goes back to Latin plenus ‘full’. The Greek equivalent plēthōrē is the source of plethora. This was first used as a medical term for an excess of fluid. The sense ‘excess’ dates from the early 18th century.
