词汇 | gleam |
词源 | gleam [OE] Originally gleam meant a bright light, such as a sunbeam, and it does not seem to have taken on the sense of a dim light until around the 18th century. It goes back to an Indo-European root ghel- which lies behind many other gl- words describing light, such as glare [ME], glimmer [ME], glimpse [ME], glint [LME] and words at *glitter. |
