词汇 | diatribe |
词源 | diatribe [L16] This came via French from Latin diatribe ‘learned discussion, school’, which came in turn from Greek diatribe ‘a wearing away of time, employment, study, discourse’. This academic sense was the standard one until the early 19th century, when the sense ‘bitter criticism, invective’ is found, a sense that seems to have been a reborrowing from French usage. |
