apoplexy [LME] Apoplexy is the old term for a stroke and comes via Latin from the Greek medical term going back to the word for ‘to strike’. In the medical sense apoplectic is early 17th century but gradually shifted to the modern sense of ‘so angry that it looks as if you could give yourself a stroke’ over the 19th to 20th centuries.
